A dispute during Holi celebrations in Uttam Nagar, a locality in New Delhi, turned violent and resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man, according to police and local reports.
The incident reportedly began after a water balloon thrown during the festival struck a woman, triggering a confrontation between two neighbouring families.
Dispute Began During Holi Celebrations
Police said the altercation started on the night of March 4 in a residential area of Uttam Nagar.
According to reports, an 11-year-old girl from one family was throwing water balloons from the terrace of her house as part of Holi celebrations. One of the balloons reportedly hit a woman from a neighbouring household, who objected to the incident.
The disagreement between the two sides escalated into a physical confrontation involving several people.
Man Dies After Alleged Assault
During the clash, three members of one family were reportedly injured. A 26-year-old man identified as Tarun Kumar later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
Family members of the deceased alleged that he was attacked by neighbours with sticks, stones and bats after returning home.
One relative said the family had apologised for the balloon incident before the situation escalated.
Police Investigating Multiple Angles
Police officials stated that the two families involved in the dispute had known each other for several decades and had reportedly been involved in disagreements in the past over minor issues.
A senior officer said investigators are examining all aspects of the case and have not concluded that the incident was purely communal in nature.
Authorities have registered a murder case, and eight people have been arrested so far in connection with the investigation.
Tension and Protests in the Area
Following the death, protests were reported in parts of Uttam Nagar. Some demonstrators allegedly damaged vehicles and blocked roads while demanding action against those responsible.
To maintain order, police deployed additional security forces in the area, including personnel from the Rapid Action Force.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to maintain peace in the locality.
