India has permitted the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Lavan to dock at the southern port of Kochi after receiving a request from Tehran, according to government officials.
The ship arrived at Kochi earlier this week, and its 183 crew members have been accommodated at Indian naval facilities, officials said.
Docking Request Linked to Technical Issues
Officials stated that Iran had approached India seeking permission for the ship to dock due to reported technical issues.
Approval for the docking was granted earlier, and the vessel eventually reached Kochi on March 4, the officials added.
The amphibious warfare ship had earlier been present in the region to participate in an International Fleet Review hosted by India.
Regional Developments Heighten Tensions
The development comes amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran.
Reports indicated that an Iranian frigate, IRIS Dena, was sunk near the coast of Sri Lanka earlier in the week following an alleged torpedo strike by a US submarine. According to reports cited by officials, the incident resulted in casualties among Iranian sailors.
Authorities in the region have been closely monitoring the situation due to concerns about security and maritime activity in nearby waters.
Sri Lanka Also Hosts Iranian Vessel
In a separate development, Sri Lanka allowed another Iranian naval ship, IRIS Booshehr, to enter its port after the vessel reportedly experienced engine problems.
Sri Lankan authorities said the ship and its 208 crew members were given temporary shelter at a naval facility before arrangements were made to move the vessel to Trincomalee harbour.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the decision was taken on humanitarian grounds and in line with international maritime conventions.
Strategic Balance for India
Observers familiar with the situation said India’s response reflects a balanced diplomatic approach.
India maintains long-standing relations with Iran while also sharing important strategic ties with the United States. Officials indicated that decisions related to the warship docking were handled keeping national interests and international norms in mind.
The developments have also drawn attention because of the broader geopolitical tensions affecting the region and global shipping routes.
Concerns Over Regional Maritime Security
The sinking of the Iranian frigate and the movement of naval vessels have raised concerns among several Indian Ocean nations regarding the potential impact of the conflict on regional maritime activity.
Security experts note that the Indian Ocean remains an important route for global trade and energy supplies, making stability in the region crucial.
Authorities in India and neighbouring countries continue to monitor the situation closely.
