Delhi Rape Cases: Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of recent rape and assault cases in Delhi, raising concerns over public safety, policing and administrative failures.
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of recent rape and assault cases in Delhi, including the Kalkaji rape case and the alleged assault of a minor inside a sleeper bus.
A bench headed by Justice Pardiwala said the right to live with dignity and without fear is a fundamental right. The court also drew parallels with the 2012 Nirbhaya case while raising concerns over the safety of women and children in public spaces.
The bench highlighted issues such as inadequate surveillance, non-functional streetlights and insufficient police patrolling, observing that preventable administrative gaps can increase risks on roads, in parks and on public transport.
The Supreme Court stressed that statements expressing concern or solidarity are not enough unless authorities take concrete measures and ensure accountability.
Notices have been issued to the Delhi administration, police and other relevant authorities, with the court seeking responses and action on the concerns raised.
The proceedings come amid renewed scrutiny of public safety in the national capital following the reported incidents. The court's intervention places the focus on whether authorities can provide measurable improvements in surveillance, policing and infrastructure to prevent similar crimes.
The case is now expected to track the response of Delhi authorities and police to the Supreme Court's concerns, while the broader issue of women's and children's safety in public spaces remains under judicial scrutiny.
