DU Relaxes 28-Credit Promotion Rule for 2025-26 Batch, Teachers Raise Concerns
Delhi University has introduced a one-time relaxation in the 28-credit promotion requirement for the 2025-26 batch.
Delhi University has introduced a one-time relaxation in its promotion criteria for students admitted in the 2025-26 academic session. Under the October 1 notification issued by the Controller of Examinations, students who have completed one year of study will be exempted from the existing requirement of securing at least 28 out of 44 credits for promotion.

The exemption applies specifically to the 2025-26 batch and will not extend to students admitted in subsequent academic sessions. DU has also stated that other provisions of its earlier promotion notifications will remain unchanged.

The decision has drawn questions from sections of the teaching community, particularly over why the relaxation was announced at this stage. Teachers have pointed out that students from the affected batch have already moved into their third semester, while examination results were still being declared through August.

Abha Dev Habib of the Delhi University Teachers' Federation questioned the absence of an explanation for the specific circumstances or hardships behind the exemption. Other faculty representatives have also raised concerns about consistency in the implementation of the National Education Policy-based Undergraduate Curriculum Framework.

The university notification itself does not publicly specify the circumstances that prompted the one-time change. Reports also note that DU's earlier framework had established the 28-credit promotion requirement under NEP UGCF-2022.

For students in the 2025-26 batch, the immediate effect is clear: completing one year of study no longer requires meeting the 28-out-of-44-credit condition for promotion under this one-time exemption. The change, however, does not establish a permanent relaxation for future batches.

The development has therefore brought attention to how DU is implementing its revised undergraduate academic framework and communicating changes to students and faculty.
