India has rejected Pakistan’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations, accusing Islamabad of spreading what it described as false claims about the Union Territory.

India delivered its response through Member of Parliament Mahima Kumari Mewar during a meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee on Friday. The discussion was held under the agenda item on decolonisation.

Exercising its Right of Reply, Mewar said Pakistan was misusing the international forum to raise the Kashmir issue. She reiterated India’s position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral part of the country.

Mewar also criticised Pakistan over its political record, citing military rule, elections, the treatment of elected leaders, religious extremism and allegations of state-sponsored terrorism.

India raises concerns over human rights

India also accused Pakistan of human rights violations in territories under its control. Mewar alleged that Pakistani forces and affiliated groups had killed civilians involved in protests over basic rights, freedoms and essential services in recent months.

These allegations were made as part of India’s response at the UN.

The exchange took place during a visit to New York by a 15-member delegation of Indian MPs for a UN familiarisation programme. The delegation held meetings at the United Nations and met members of the Indian diaspora at a reception hosted by the Consulate General of India.

The latest exchange reflects the continuing diplomatic dispute between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir, with both countries presenting opposing positions at international forums.
