The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will hold elections for its Executive Council on December 5, with voting for the Athletes’ Commission scheduled for November 3.

The election process began on Saturday with the appointment of former Election Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Srivastava as returning officer. He will oversee elections for the Executive Council, Athletes’ Commission and Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit category.

IOA president PT Usha said the 2026 elections would strengthen transparency, accountability and athlete-focused governance within Indian sport.

Athletes’ Commission elections in November

Polling, counting and the declaration of results for the Athletes’ Commission are scheduled for November 3. National Sports Federations have until 2 pm on October 11 to nominate two athlete representatives through their respective commissions.

The new commission will comprise 10 elected members, with equal representation for men and women. The rules also provide for representation from Olympic-category sports and athletes who have achieved success at major competitions.

Applications for the Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit roster opened on September 18. Eligible applicants can submit their forms and supporting documents until October 18.

The elections will follow the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, its 2026 rules, the amended IOA Constitution and applicable election regulations.

Governance in focus ahead of 2036 Olympics

The leadership transition comes as India pursues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad. India is among seven interested parties in dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, alongside Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye.

The December election will determine the IOA’s next Executive Council as India continues its Olympic hosting efforts.
