Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns, MSK Prasad Backs Mohammed Shami for India Comeback
Former chief selector MSK Prasad has welcomed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s T20I recall and urged selectors to consider Mohammed Shami for India’s Test and ODI teams ahead of major assignments.
Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the T20I squad and called for Mohammed Shami to receive another opportunity in Test and ODI cricket.
Bhuvneshwar earned a recall for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Prasad said the experienced pacer deserved selection after his consistent Indian Premier League performances.
The 36-year-old claimed 17 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025 and followed it with 28 in 2026. His 45 wickets across the two seasons strengthened his case for an international return. Bhuvneshwar last represented India in November 2022.
Prasad believes the pacer can still contribute at the highest level, particularly in T20 cricket, although he expressed less certainty about his prospects in the ODI format.
The former selector also urged India to consider Shami for upcoming international assignments. The Bengal fast bowler took four wickets against Delhi at the start of the Ranji Trophy season, offering a reminder of his red-ball ability.
Prasad highlighted Shami’s performances at the 2015, 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups while arguing that his experience could benefit India ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand provides a potential opportunity for selectors to assess their options. The Test and ODI squads were yet to be announced at the time of the report.
Shami’s performances in domestic cricket could prove important as he seeks to return to the national team.
