Jaipur Doctors Remove 28.6-Kg Tumour From 59-Year-Old Woman
Doctors at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital successfully removed a 28.6-kg retroperitoneal sarcoma from a 59-year-old woman during a three-hour high-risk surgery.
Doctors at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Hospital have successfully removed a 28.6-kg retroperitoneal tumour from a 59-year-old woman during a high-risk surgery lasting around three hours.
The woman had reportedly been living with the growing abdominal tumour for nearly three years. As its size increased, she began experiencing difficulty walking and carrying out normal movements. She had also sought treatment at several places, but the tumour’s enormous size made surgery particularly challenging.
Doctors at SMS Hospital identified the growth as a retroperitoneal sarcoma and decided to operate after consultation with the cancer department.
The surgery was led by senior professor Dr Jeevan Kankaria. The tumour was located close to several vital structures. The ureter was positioned in front of it, while the mass was attached to the intestines, liver, pancreas, urinary bladder and major blood vessels.
The surgical team carefully separated the tumour from the surrounding organs and blood vessels while attempting to protect the vital structures. After approximately three hours, the 28.6-kg mass was successfully removed.
The patient was shifted to the ICU for observation following the procedure. Doctors said her condition remained stable and her recovery was satisfactory before she was moved to the ward.
The surgery was performed free of cost under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS).
The case highlights the complexity of treating large retroperitoneal tumours, particularly when they become closely associated with major organs and blood vessels.
