NEET PG Counselling 2026: NMC Adds 5,827 Seats, Total Intake Nears 58,000
NMC has increased the NEET PG 2026-27 seat intake by 5,827, taking the total to around 58,000 postgraduate medical seats.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the institute- and course-wise seat matrix for NEET PG admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, with the total number of postgraduate medical seats rising to around 58,000.
The latest intake is about 5,827 seats higher than the 52,173 seats available last year, marking an increase of nearly 11 percent. The rise includes seats across MD, MS and diploma programmes, giving NEET PG candidates a larger pool of options during counselling.
Private and deemed medical universities have recorded an increase of around 32 percent in postgraduate seats, while government medical colleges have seen an increase of about 10 percent.
However, the NMC has clarified that the current seat matrix may be revised. Changes could follow decisions by the Appeal Committee or other competent authorities. Applications seeking increased intake in existing courses or approval for new postgraduate courses are also not included in the current matrix.
Any subsequently approved seats or courses will be added through an updated matrix on the NMC website.
The NMC has directed medical colleges to admit students only against approved seats and instructed counselling authorities to refer discrepancies in the notified matrix to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
The NEET PG 2026 counselling schedule is yet to be announced. Candidates should check the latest seat matrix and official notifications before filling their choices.
