Opposition MPs Meet in Delhi as EC Protests Continue Amid Heavy Security
Opposition MPs met in Delhi as protests against the Election Commission continued, with heavy security deployed around central Delhi following recent marches.
Opposition Members of Parliament gathered in central Delhi on Thursday for a lunch meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, as the political confrontation with the Election Commission continued.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, including leaders from the Samajwadi Party, attended the meeting to discuss the Opposition’s strategy following protests and marches towards the Election Commission and Jantar Mantar earlier this week.
Security was tightened across central Delhi, particularly around Connaught Place, with Rapid Action Force and Central Armed Police Forces personnel deployed. Party workers gathered near the outer circle, carrying flags and raising slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protests are linked to Opposition demands concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have raised concerns over the exercise and have demanded greater accountability from the Election Commission.
The BJP, meanwhile, defended the government’s record while responding to the Opposition’s criticism. A BJP leader argued that direct benefit transfers have helped ensure government assistance reaches intended beneficiaries and have prevented leakages, resulting in savings for the public exchequer.
The latest meeting comes amid a broader escalation in political activity over the electoral-roll revision, with Opposition leaders coordinating their response both inside Parliament and on the streets.
As demonstrations continue, the Election Commission has become a key flashpoint between the government and Opposition, turning electoral-roll verification into a wider political contest.
