The RBI raised the repo rate to 5.50% and shifted to a calibrated tightening stance, signalling that inflation control is now taking priority even as the central bank raises its FY27 growth forecast.

RBI MPC: 5 Key Takeaways as Rate Cuts Move Off the Table
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announces the October 2026 monetary policy decision.
The Reserve Bank of India has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, marking its first increase since February 2023. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee unanimously backed the hike and shifted its stance from neutral to “calibrated tightening”.

The first takeaway is that borrowing costs are moving higher after a long easing phase. The Standing Deposit Facility rate now stands at 5.25%, while the Marginal Standing Facility and Bank Rate are at 5.75%.

Second, rate cuts are off the table for now. Governor Sanjay Malhotra said future action would be limited to a hike or pause, depending on inflation and economic conditions.

Third, inflation has become the RBI’s bigger concern. The FY27 CPI inflation forecast was raised to 5.2%, with risks including higher commodity prices and global uncertainty.

Fourth, the RBI remains confident about growth. It raised its FY27 GDP forecast by 40 basis points to 7.1%, citing resilient domestic activity.

Finally, the policy signals a more cautious road ahead. The RBI is supporting growth, but the message is clear: cheaper money is no longer the automatic answer.
