RBI MPC: 5 Key Risks Flagged by Governor Sanjay Malhotra
The RBI has flagged elevated oil prices, El Nino, fragile global financial conditions, geopolitical tensions and broader inflation pressures as key risks to India’s economic outlook.
The Reserve Bank of India has highlighted five major risks to India’s economic outlook as it raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening.
The first concern is elevated international oil prices. Higher energy costs can push up domestic inflation while increasing input expenses for businesses.
Second, deficient and uneven monsoon rainfall, along with strong El Nino conditions, could affect agriculture, the Rabi season and rural demand. The RBI has also noted broader pressure across food prices.
Third, fragile global financial conditions remain a risk. Rising bond yields in advanced economies, an appreciating US dollar and continued trade uncertainty could increase pressure on emerging markets.
Fourth, geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions could weigh on growth. The RBI has pointed to elevated commodity prices, supply-chain disruptions and the unresolved West Asia conflict as downside risks.
The fifth concern is broadening domestic inflation. The RBI said the share of CPI items recording inflation above 4% rose to about 37% in August, alongside signs of higher core inflation.
The policy shift shows the RBI is trying to contain these risks while keeping economic growth resilient.
