India-US Ties ‘Very Good’ Despite Trade Deal Stalemate, Says Piyush Goyal

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has described India-US relations as “very good” despite prolonged negotiations over a bilateral trade agreement and continuing differences between the two countries.

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi on Wednesday, Goyal said he did not see a fundamental problem in the relationship. He stressed that cooperation between the two major democracies remained important across several sectors.

India and the United States have held multiple rounds of trade negotiations but have yet to conclude an agreement. Tariff disputes and disagreements over market access have complicated efforts to finalise a deal.

Goyal said the two countries continued to engage on several fronts, including defence, technology, goods, services and supply chains. His remarks suggested that broader cooperation remained a priority despite the trade impasse.

Relations have also faced friction over US President Donald Trump’s claim that he helped end armed clashes between India and Pakistan last year. Immigration has emerged as another point of disagreement, including debates over H-1B visas and opportunities for skilled Indian workers.

Goyal also said India was seeking to revive ties with China. He emphasised that New Delhi remained open to engagement with countries where it could secure fair terms and continuity in relations.

His comments underline India’s effort to maintain international economic partnerships while managing trade disputes and shifting geopolitical conditions.
