The World Bank has raised its forecast for India’s economic growth in FY27 to 7.1%, up from 6.6% in its previous estimate. The upgrade reflects strong domestic demand and continued momentum in industry and services. The bank expects growth to remain strong at 7.2% in FY28.

The October South Asia Economic Update also highlights artificial intelligence as a potential source of productivity and new growth opportunities. The World Bank’s latest assessment examines how AI adoption could affect businesses, jobs and services across the region.

For India, the challenge is moving from experimentation to wider and more productive AI use. World Bank enterprise survey data shows that Indian firms are increasingly adopting AI, although infrastructure, skills and education remain important constraints.

Agriculture remains a near-term risk to the outlook. A weak monsoon can affect farm output, rural demand and food prices, potentially offsetting some of the strength elsewhere in the economy.

India is also expected to remain a major contributor to South Asia’s growth. The World Bank continues to identify robust domestic demand and structural reforms as important supports for the region’s expansion.

The broader message is fairly straightforward: India’s growth engine remains strong, but agriculture, infrastructure and the ability to turn AI enthusiasm into actual productivity will determine how much further it can accelerate.
