The Supreme Court of India has granted regular bail to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt in a cheating case involving alleged misappropriation of funds worth ₹30 crore.
Earlier this week, the court had granted interim bail to Shwetambari Bhatt. On Thursday, it allowed the couple’s appeal seeking regular bail, offering them relief in the ongoing case.
What Is the Case About?
The case stems from an FIR registered in Udaipur in November 2025. The complaint was filed by Dr Ajay Murdia of Indira IVF at Bhupalpura police station.
According to the FIR, the complainant entered into an agreement with Vikram Bhatt’s company for the production of films and documentaries in memory of his late wife. It alleged that after an initial investment of ₹7 crore and further funding commitments for four films worth ₹47 crore, the promised projects were not delivered.
The complaint further stated that more than ₹30 crore was allegedly siphoned off through what police described as fake bills and documents.
The Bhatts were arrested by Udaipur Police on December 7, 2025.
Defence and Court Proceedings
Vikram Bhatt has denied the allegations. Through his lawyer, he stated that all payments were made with mutual knowledge and that there were no fake or bogus bills. The defence has maintained that the matter is essentially civil in nature rather than criminal.
In January, the Rajasthan High Court rejected the couple’s bail plea. The High Court also declined to quash the FIR, observing that the case involved allegations of misappropriation of funds in addition to breach of trust.
Following this, the couple moved the apex court seeking relief. The Supreme Court’s order granting regular bail allows them to remain out of custody while the investigation continues.
Investigation Continues
Police investigations into the alleged financial irregularities are still underway. The court has not made any findings on the merits of the case at this stage.
The legal proceedings will continue as authorities examine the financial transactions and contractual arrangements linked to the film project.
