The Tamil Nadu government has announced a ₹3,000 cash gift for all eligible rice ration card holders as part of its Pongal welfare initiative this year.
The decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, with the cash assistance to be provided along with the traditional Pongal gift hamper. The benefit will also extend to residents of Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps across the State.
According to official information, the distribution of the Pongal gift package, including the cash component, will involve an estimated expenditure of ₹6,936 crore for the State exchequer.
In addition to the monetary assistance, arrangements have been made for the free distribution of dhotis and sarees through ration shops, continuing the government’s annual festive support programme aimed at benefiting households ahead of the harvest festival.
The Pongal gift distribution is expected to begin shortly through the public distribution system across Tamil Nadu.
