A tragic road accident in Uttar Pradesh has once again highlighted the dangers of travelling during dense winter fog. A truck driver lost his life after two heavy vehicles collided on a major highway, causing a fire that trapped him inside his vehicle.
The accident happened late at night on January 1, 2026, on the Agra–Etawah–Kanpur six-lane highway near Etawah district. According to police officials, visibility on the road was extremely poor due to thick fog.
One of the trucks was carrying gypsum from Haryana to Varanasi. As it moved through the foggy highway, the truck ahead suddenly applied brakes. Because the driver behind could not see clearly and had very little time to react, his truck rammed into the vehicle in front.
After the collision, the truck carrying gypsum caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and soon reached the driver’s cabin. Sadly, the driver was trapped inside and could not escape. He was burnt alive before help could arrive.
People passing by on the highway noticed the fire and immediately informed the police and fire brigade. Firefighters rushed to the spot with multiple fire engines. It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control. By then, the truck cabin had been completely destroyed.
The accident caused long traffic jams on the busy highway. Vehicles were stopped for several hours until a crane was brought in to remove the burnt truck and clear the road.
After the fire was put out, police recovered the charred remains of the driver from inside the cabin. He was later identified as Jaskirat Singh, a resident of Sirsa district in Haryana. His identity was confirmed by another truck driver who was travelling behind him.
Police said the driver’s body has been sent for postmortem examination. Further legal formalities are being completed.
The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety during winter months, especially on highways where heavy vehicles travel at high speed despite low visibility.
