EC Removes SIR-Linked Annexure From Form 6 in States Where Revision Is Complete
The Election Commission has removed the additional SIR-linked declaration from online Form 6 in states where the electoral roll revision has been completed, restoring the statutory form for new voter registration.
The Election Commission has removed an additional declaration linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) from online Form 6 in states where the electoral roll revision has been completed. The move comes amid objections over whether the extra requirement could be introduced without formally changing the statutory rules.
The additional declaration had required new voters to provide details connecting themselves, their parents or grandparents to electoral rolls from an earlier intensive revision. Applicants could also be asked for previous constituency, polling booth and serial-number details.
The requirement had raised concerns particularly for young voters and people seeking re-enrolment after their names were removed from electoral rolls. Critics within the poll panel questioned whether the statutory Form 6 could be modified without amending the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
The Election Commission has maintained that Form 6 itself was never amended and that the additional declaration was introduced only for the SIR process. It has now been removed from the ECINET app, portal and state election websites where SIR has concluded.
In states where SIR is still underway, the additional declaration remains. So, for now, voter registration has effectively gone back to the regular Form 6 in completed states—because apparently even a form needs its own plot twist.
