ICE Officer Shoots Dominican Man During New York Arrest, Sparks Protests
A Dominican man was wounded during a federal immigration operation in New York City, triggering protests and condemnation from local leaders as scrutiny intensifies over US Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics.
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and wounded a Dominican man during an arrest in New York City on Thursday, October 8, prompting protests, political backlash and renewed questions about federal immigration enforcement.
The shooting occurred around 4 pm in Marble Hill during what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as a targeted enforcement operation. The injured man survived and was taken to hospital. According to New York officials, the man was inside a vehicle with a five-year-old child when agents opened fire. The child was reportedly unharmed.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident “unconscionable and incredibly serious”, while Governor Kathy Hochul demanded answers. Mamdani also said he intended to urge President Donald Trump to end federal immigration enforcement operations in the city.
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots before seeing the injured man surrounded by federal officers. Videos circulating online showed officers at the scene and police transporting an apparently injured person.
The incident triggered demonstrations, with protesters chanting for ICE to leave city streets. Some demonstrators later clashed with police near the hospital, where officers erected barricades. Authorities made several arrests.
DHS described the injured man as an undocumented immigrant with a previous grand larceny conviction and other arrests. The agency defended its enforcement operations, blaming policies in so-called sanctuary jurisdictions for creating risks for officers.
The shooting has also renewed scrutiny of ICE vehicle stops. The agency previously instructed officers to avoid high-speed pursuits and conduct vehicle stops only after completing specified training.
The incident has intensified concerns over transparency, officer conduct and the impact of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown on local communities.
