INDIA Bloc Protest Near Akashvani Bhavan Over Election Commission Demands
Opposition MPs led by Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders were stopped during a march towards the Election Commission in Delhi, with protesters demanding changes over the SIR process and the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Opposition MPs and leaders of the INDIA bloc staged a protest in New Delhi on October 6 after Delhi Police stopped their march towards the Election Commission headquarters. The demonstration was led by leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge.
The march began from Parliament and was halted near the NITI Aayog office, on the stretch leading towards Akashvani Bhavan and the Election Commission. Police had deployed multiple barricades and security personnel in the area. Several opposition leaders were detained during the standoff.
The opposition said it was protesting over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters also demanded a return to ballot papers and raised concerns about the electoral process.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi later staged a sit-in inside Akashvani Bhavan after the march was stopped.
The protest comes amid an ongoing dispute over the Election Commission’s decisions linked to voter registration and SIR. The Commission has rejected allegations that its procedures were unlawful, while the Supreme Court has sought responses on questions surrounding certain SIR-related decisions.
The political confrontation is likely to continue as the court examines the wider SIR dispute.
