India Has 6,954 Scientists on the Single-Year List and 3,898 on the Career-Long List

India has 6,954 researchers on the 2026 single-year Stanford-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list and 3,898 on its career-long list. The figures measure different types of citation impact, not an absolute ranking of scientific excellence.

India has 6,954 researchers on the 2026 single-year Stanford-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list, compared with 3,898 on the career-long list. Both datasets track research impact through citation-based indicators, but they measure different periods.

The database, developed by Stanford researcher John P.A. Ioannidis and collaborators and published through Elsevier, assesses scientists using multiple citation metrics.

Why Are There Two Different Lists?

The single-year list measures citation impact during one calendar year. The 2026 edition uses citations received in 2025, highlighting researchers whose recent work attracted attention.

The career-long list measures cumulative citation impact across a scientist’s career, with data updated through the end of 2025. Researchers can appear on either list or both.

According to TOPSCINET, India's single-year count rose from 4,635 in 2023 to 6,954 in 2026. The career-long count increased from 2,578 to 3,898 over the same period.

How Are Scientists Selected?

The database considers indicators such as total citations, the h-index, a co-authorship-adjusted hm-index and a composite citation score. It groups researchers across scientific fields and subfields to account for differences in citation practices.

However, a place on the list does not automatically establish that a scientist is among the world's best in every respect. Citations can reflect influential findings, but they can also reflect criticism or correction. Self-citations and other citation practices can affect scores.

The lists offer a useful measure of research visibility, but scientific quality also depends on originality, reliability, real-world impact and contributions beyond published papers.
