A 52-year-old employee was killed and three others were injured after a Russian drone strike hit an Indian-owned pharmaceutical facility in Ukraine’s Sumy region, according to local authorities cited by Ukrainian media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered condolences to the victim’s family and said Russian drones had struck the pharmaceutical warehouse along with other targets in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Embassy in India said the facility belonged to Indian owners and was not a military target. The embassy condemned the attack, while its comments about Russia and the purpose of the strike reflected Ukraine’s position on the incident.

The facility is linked to the Kusum Group, an Indian-founded pharmaceutical company that has operated in Ukraine for years. Reports said the main structure sustained extensive damage in the attack.

The strike comes as India continues diplomatic engagement with both Kyiv and Moscow. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently said India had intensified efforts to support a negotiated resolution to the conflict through discussions with both sides.

The incident adds another layer to India’s difficult balancing act: maintaining longstanding ties with Russia while expanding engagement with Ukraine amid the continuing war.

For the workers at the facility, however, geopolitics was far removed from the immediate reality of a deadly strike.
