External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations headquarters during the final high-level week of the UN General Assembly, with discussions focusing on global conflicts and their impact on developing nations.

According to the UN Secretary-General's office, the talks covered multilateralism, India-UN cooperation and geopolitical developments, including the war in Ukraine and the situation in West Asia.

Jaishankar said the discussions also focused on mitigating the effects of ongoing conflicts, particularly on countries across the Global South.

The meeting came shortly after Jaishankar's address during the UN General Assembly's General Debate, where he acknowledged Guterres' decade of service as UN Secretary-General and highlighted his contributions to multilateralism and India's Mission LiFE initiative.

Guterres is serving his final high-level UNGA week, with his second five-year term as Secretary-General scheduled to end in December 2026. He had also visited India earlier this month for the BRICS Leaders' Summit.

Jaishankar's meeting with Guterres was part of an intensive diplomatic schedule at the UN. The External Affairs Minister said he met around 85-90 counterparts during what he described as a particularly busy week.

The discussions come as conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine continue to create wider diplomatic, economic and humanitarian challenges for countries across the Global South.
