Karnataka plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) training in government schools from Class 6, expanding an initiative that has already started for Class 9 students.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar directed officials to explore the expansion during a review meeting on the government’s priority programmes. The Information Technology Department and private-sector partners are expected to support the initiative.

According to the Karnataka government, Google has expressed interest in providing AI training in schools. Officials have been asked to examine the company’s education initiatives in Telangana while planning the programme.

The government is also exploring the establishment of an AI university in Karnataka and has directed officials to identify suitable land.

The AI push is part of a wider education agenda. The government plans to develop 1,000 Karnataka Public Schools, with 100 proposed to be funded through corporate social responsibility contributions. Companies have reportedly expressed interest in developing 60 schools.

The state is also working on other technology-driven initiatives, including agricultural chatbots, drone and satellite-based crop estimation and digital crop surveys.

If implemented, introducing AI education from Class 6 could give students an early start in understanding one of the technologies increasingly shaping education and jobs. Apparently, the AI syllabus is getting younger too.
