Messi Addresses World Cup Conspiracy Theories in Argentina Farewell Speech

Lionel Messi addressed conspiracy theories surrounding Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign during an emotional farewell speech after his final international appearance.
Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium, with Messi scoring from the penalty spot and assisting two goals. The 39-year-old then spoke to the crowd about his decision to step away from international football and reflected on the team’s World Cup campaign.
Messi rejected suggestions that something unusual had happened during Argentina’s run to the final against Spain. He said the team had faced enormous physical and emotional pressure, particularly during their match against England, and insisted that he and his teammates had given everything.
He also thanked Argentina supporters for backing the national team throughout his career and urged them to remain united behind the next generation of players.
Messi said he would miss wearing Argentina’s colours but would continue supporting the team. He ended his international career as Argentina’s most-capped player, with 208 appearances, and its leading scorer with 126 goals.
For a player who spent 21 years carrying Argentina’s expectations, the farewell had plenty of emotion—and, fittingly, one final Messi goal.
