A literary event involving 1,572 authors has entered the Guinness World Records, with Amal College of Advanced Studies professor Umesh U. receiving recognition for his role in the initiative.

The record was created in Chennai on July 26, 2026, when 1,572 participants simultaneously signed their own books. The feat surpassed the previous record of 1,502 authors, set at the Sharjah International Book Fair in 2019.

Umesh, who heads the Commerce Department at Amal College in Nilambur, received the Guinness certificate at an event in Chennai. The initiative was organised with ESN Publications and the London Organisation of Skills Development, with 18 B.Com students from Amal College volunteering.

This is not Umesh’s first Guinness-linked achievement. In 2023, he was associated with a book measuring 5.80 metres and containing 100,100 pages, described at the time as the world’s thickest unpublished book.

The latest record adds another unusual chapter to Umesh’s involvement in large-scale literary projects. Apparently, when a regular book launch is not dramatic enough, you get 1,572 authors signing books at once.
