Omani Flydubai Co-Pilot Accused of Discussing Killing Jews Online
An Omani Flydubai co-pilot accused of stabbing Indian captain Smit Machchhar reportedly posted about killing Jews online as investigations examine possible radicalisation and terrorism links.
The Omani co-pilot accused of stabbing Indian captain Smit Machchhar and attempting to take control of a Flydubai flight reportedly had social media posts discussing the killing of Jews, according to an Israeli official. Authorities are investigating whether the incident was linked to terrorism, radicalisation or another motive.
Israeli officials said the co-pilot appeared to have embraced jihadist ideology and reportedly asked crew members to kill him after being restrained. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the suspect as having undergone Islamist radicalisation, while also cautioning that the investigation had not yet established a definitive motive.
Flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, plunged more than 17,000 feet during the incident before passengers and crew overpowered the attacker. The aircraft later made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia and was secured safely.
Investigators are also examining alleged pro-Palestinian material found among the co-pilot’s belongings and his reported hostility toward Israel. UAE authorities have launched an investigation into whether terrorism was involved, while Israel is conducting its own security review.
US President Donald Trump and UAE officials have suggested that Iran could potentially be connected to the incident, but no definitive evidence establishing Iranian involvement has been publicly confirmed. Netanyahu has also said it is too early to determine whether Tehran played any role.
Captain Smit Machchhar, who was injured in the attack, is reportedly recovering well. Indian and Israeli leaders have praised him for helping prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.
