Sitharaman Speech Disrupted in Andhra Pradesh, Congress and NDA Trade Claims
A brief disruption during Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech in Madanapalle has triggered a political dispute, with Congress alleging job-related anger and the Andhra Pradesh government calling it crowd enthusiasm.
A brief disruption during Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, has triggered a political dispute over what caused the crowd to shout.
The incident occurred on October 2 during the launch of the Rs 1 lakh crore Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising project. A video showed Sitharaman asking the gathering to listen before Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu intervened and asked people to sit down.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared the footage and described it as an indication of public anger, with some social media posts claiming people were demanding jobs. However, the audio and available footage do not conclusively establish why the crowd was shouting.
Sitharaman rejected that interpretation, saying supporters of the TDP and Jana Sena were eager to interact with their leaders. Naidu likewise said the reaction reflected enthusiasm rather than anger.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh and BJP state president PVN Madhav also rejected the Congress interpretation, accusing it of drawing conclusions from a clipped video.
The event itself focused on a proposed horticulture hub and the Indian School of Agriculture. The competing claims have since shifted attention from the development projects to the meaning of a few noisy moments in the crowd.
