Tamil Nadu has launched the Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram scheme, under which eligible newborns delivered in government hospitals will receive a one-gram 22-carat gold ring.

The scheme was launched at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai and will apply retrospectively from June 22, 2026. The programme has an annual allocation of more than Rs 755 crore, while 1.28 lakh rings have been prepared for the initial phase.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging institutional deliveries and increasing public confidence in government healthcare facilities. It forms part of a wider set of welfare measures introduced by the state, including free breakfast, wedding assistance, bus travel concessions and educational support.

At the same time, a political dispute has emerged between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam over the Veeramani case investigation.

Questions have been raised regarding the gap between submission of the closure report and its verification by the court, the timeline for constituting the Special Investigation Team and the delay in Veeramani's arrest.

The welfare programme and the political dispute are separate developments, with the gold-ring initiative focusing on maternal and newborn welfare while the Veeramani controversy concerns the handling of an investigation.
