TRAI Changes Mobile Recharge Rules: What Jio, Airtel and Vi Users Need to Know
TRAI has changed consumer protection rules to expand voice-and-SMS-only recharge options, giving users more flexibility over mobile plans without data.
TRAI has introduced new consumer protection rules that could change how some prepaid users recharge their phones. The telecom regulator now requires Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to offer more voice-and-SMS-only plans without bundled mobile data.
The move is aimed particularly at users who rarely need mobile data, including some senior citizens, low-income consumers and people who primarily use Wi-Fi. Under the amended rules, operators must provide voice-and-SMS-only options for validity periods of 30 days or less where comparable bundled plans already exist. These plans must also be priced lower than their bundled counterparts with an appropriate tariff reduction.
Operators will also have to offer at least one voice-and-SMS plan that can be renewed on the same date every month, along with a longer-validity option corresponding to their longer bundled plans.
The rules follow TRAI's consultation process, which received 1,132 stakeholder responses before the regulator finalised the amendment.
For consumers, the changes could mean more flexibility and potentially lower costs if they do not need mobile data. However, the exact savings will depend on the plans and prices introduced by individual operators.
The amendment does not force telecom companies to convert existing 28-day plans into 30-day plans. It instead focuses on expanding voice-and-SMS-only choices and introducing a monthly-renewal option.
