A rare snake with two heads and four eyes has been rescued from a farm in Gujarat’s Dahod district, giving wildlife enthusiasts a close look at an unusual developmental condition.

The roughly six-inch-long snake was found in Agaswani village in Dhanpur taluka and was safely rescued by members of a local wildlife group after residents alerted them.

The snake has been identified as a wolf snake, a non-venomous species generally considered harmless to humans. Its unusual appearance is linked to bicephaly, a form of polycephaly in which an animal develops two heads on a single body.

The condition occurs during embryonic development and is generally associated with incomplete separation of developing embryos or abnormal embryonic patterning. It has been documented across several animal groups, including reptiles, birds, fish and mammals.

The two heads can have separate eyes and neural structures, allowing them to respond independently. That can create problems with movement, feeding and reacting to threats, making survival in the wild more difficult.

Local rescuers estimate the snake is about a year old and are taking steps to ensure its safety.

Nature occasionally appears to have its own unexpected plot twists—and this one comes with two heads.
