US Bans Nearly $1 Billion in Canadian Imports Amid Trade War
The United States has imposed new restrictions on selected Canadian imports amid escalating trade tensions.
The United States has imposed a ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian imports, including alcoholic beverages, some dairy products and motorcycles, escalating an already tense trade dispute with Canada.

The measure took effect Tuesday and covers an estimated $967 million in Canadian goods based on 2025 trade figures. Alcoholic beverages account for the largest share, while selected dairy products and motorcycles are also affected.

The latest restrictions follow US tariffs of up to 50% on around $20 billion of Canadian imports. Canada responded with its own tariffs on US products, prompting the latest US action.

Trade experts said the immediate economic impact could be limited because many affected products were already subject to high tariffs, making some imports less commercially viable. However, the new restrictions could further complicate negotiations between Washington and Ottawa.

The dispute comes as the two countries prepare to review the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which governs much of North American trade. The new measures have added uncertainty for businesses that rely on cross-border supply chains.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has sought to reduce his country's dependence on the US market by expanding trade with other countries. Canada has also been pursuing stronger economic ties with India, China and the European Union.

US officials have indicated that negotiations remain possible, while Canadian authorities say their focus is on supporting domestic businesses and diversifying international partnerships. The latest import ban therefore adds another layer to a wider trade dispute whose economic effects may unfold over the coming months.
