Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to move to the Rajya Sabha, a development that could lead to a leadership change in the state government.
According to reports, the move may allow the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appoint its own chief minister in Bihar for the first time since the formation of the alliance government.
Possible leadership transition in Bihar
Nitish Kumar, who recently turned 75, took oath as Bihar’s chief minister for a record tenth term after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a strong victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
Sources indicate that he may file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Patna in the presence of senior NDA leaders. However, no official announcement has yet confirmed the transition.
If the move takes place, it would mark a significant shift in Bihar’s political leadership.
NDA candidates expected to file nominations
Reports suggest that several other NDA leaders may also file nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections.
Among those expected to contest are BJP leader Nitin Nabin, Union minister Ram Nath Thakur, and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party leader Upendra Kushwaha.
Senior NDA leaders are likely to be present during the nomination process.
Speculation over new chief minister
Political observers say the possible transition could pave the way for a BJP chief minister in Bihar.
Among the names being discussed are Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Union minister Nityanand Rai, though no official decision has been announced.
Samrat Choudhary, who currently holds the home portfolio in the Bihar government, is seen by some analysts as a leading contender.
Entry of Nitish Kumar’s son discussed
There is also speculation that Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar’s son, may enter politics.
Some reports suggest he could take on a role in the state government, possibly as a deputy chief minister, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Long political career
Nitish Kumar has been a central figure in Bihar politics for nearly two decades. He has served as chief minister since 2005, except for a brief period following the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when Jitan Ram Manjhi held the position.
Over the years, Kumar has changed alliances multiple times while remaining a key figure in the state’s coalition politics.
Party leaders have said that Nitish Kumar continues to enjoy significant public support in Bihar.
