UN Chief Antonio Guterres Arrives in Islamabad for Talks With Pakistan Leadership
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Islamabad for a three-day visit focused on regional and international issues, UN cooperation and Pakistan’s disaster preparedness efforts.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on October 6 for a three-day official visit focused on regional and international developments, Pakistan’s cooperation with the United Nations and disaster preparedness.
The visit, at the invitation of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, will include meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office.
Guterres was received by Acting Foreign Secretary Nabeel Muni after arriving in the Pakistani capital.
He is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan and attend a briefing at Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office said the visit would provide an opportunity to discuss regional and global developments while highlighting the country’s commitment to multilateralism and the UN Charter.
The disaster-management engagement is expected to focus on preparedness and early-warning systems, an area Pakistan has sought to strengthen amid its exposure to extreme weather and natural disasters.
Guterres’ visit comes as Pakistan continues to emphasise multilateral engagement in its foreign policy. His meetings with the country’s political and military leadership are expected to cover broader regional and international issues, alongside Pakistan-UN cooperation.
