A political confrontation over the functioning of the Election Commission of India has intensified, with the BJP and opposition parties exchanging allegations over the poll panel’s decision-making and voter-roll revision process.

The BJP has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the opposition for questioning the Election Commission, arguing that the poll body’s decisions are taken collectively. The Election Commission has also maintained that major decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls were approved unanimously by all three commissioners.

The opposition, meanwhile, has raised concerns over the functioning of the commission, including the use of Form 6 during voter registration and the ongoing SIR exercise. Congress leaders have sought greater accountability, while the Samajwadi Party has questioned the credibility of the poll panel.

The Form 6 controversy centres on an additional declaration introduced alongside the statutory form. The Election Commission has clarified that the original Form 6 itself was not changed and that the additional declaration was introduced through a separate annexure under SIR-related orders.

The dispute has also included allegations about internal differences within the Election Commission. The poll body has rejected the suggestion that such discussions affected its final decisions, reiterating that major SIR orders were approved unanimously.

The political clash is now keeping the Election Commission, voter-list revision and electoral procedures at the centre of a wider debate between the ruling party and opposition.
