Indian 3 Back on Track: Kamal Haasan Returns as Senapathy
Kamal Haasan and director S Shankar’s Indian 3 is moving ahead after months of uncertainty following the underwhelming performance of Indian 2. The makers have confirmed that post-production work on the third chapter has begun.
Kamal Haasan and director S Shankar’s Indian 3 is finally moving forward, ending months of uncertainty over the third chapter of the popular vigilante franchise. The makers have confirmed that work on the film has begun, with the project now entering post-production.
Haasan will return as Senapathy, while Shankar has written and directed the film. The makers announced the development on social media with the message that Senapathy is returning with “zero tolerance” as the franchise enters its next phase. A release date has not yet been announced.
The future of Indian 3 had remained uncertain after Indian 2, released in July 2024, failed to meet expectations at the box office. The sequel reportedly faced criticism over its screenplay and execution, while its commercial performance raised questions about whether the third instalment would actually make it to the big screen.
However, Indian 2 had already laid the groundwork for another chapter, ending with a glimpse into Senapathy’s past and introducing Veerasekaran Balram, his father. Portions of the second and third films were also shot together.
Indian 3 will explore the backstory of Veerasekaran Balram, with Haasan portraying the freedom fighter and taking the story into a historical setting. The film will continue to feature Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah.
Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, while Ravi Varman is handling cinematography. The film is being produced under the Lyca Productions banner.
For fans who thought Senapathy's story had quietly joined the long list of unfinished sequels, the latest update suggests otherwise.
