Jose Mourinho Mocks Manchester City Financial Case, Jokes Verdict Could Outlast Him
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has poked fun at the prolonged legal battle between Manchester City and the Premier League, joking that the verdict and subsequent appeals could take so long that he may not live to see the final outcome.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has taken a sarcastic swipe at Manchester City's ongoing financial case, questioning how long it could take for the legal dispute and its appeals process to reach a final conclusion.
The case centres on allegations of financial rule violations by Manchester City between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. An independent commission reportedly found the club responsible for multiple breaches, including violations linked to its financial disclosures and failure to cooperate fully with the Premier League's investigation.
Manchester City have denied wrongdoing and challenged the ruling through an appeal. The Premier League had alleged that commercial arrangements were used to overstate income and underreport expenses by more than £900 million over nearly a decade.
Speaking to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho said he preferred to laugh about the situation rather than take it too seriously. He joked that both he and Pep Guardiola, who are in their 60s, would need considerable luck to be around when the final verdict arrives.
The Portuguese manager also highlighted the possibility of multiple rounds of legal challenges, suggesting that a verdict could be followed by further appeals and more proceedings.
Mourinho has a connection to the Premier League rivalry, having managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018. His tenure included the 2017-18 season, when United finished second behind Guardiola's Manchester City.
Meanwhile, City have made a strong start to the current league campaign, sitting at the top of the standings with a perfect record after five matches, according to the report. They are scheduled to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, October 11.
The legal dispute continues to attract attention, with its eventual outcome potentially carrying significant implications for the club.
