Mithun Chakraborty Named Bengal Government Cultural Adviser
Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been given a formal role as cultural adviser to the West Bengal government, with Cabinet rank in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as a cultural adviser to the West Bengal government, giving him a formal role in matters related to the state’s cultural and film sectors. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the appointment during the foundation ceremony of the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town.
Chakraborty will hold Cabinet rank while serving in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, which is handled by the chief minister. The appointment comes as the new BJP-led state government focuses on strengthening Bengal’s film and cultural infrastructure.
The Uttam Kumar Film Centre is among the projects being developed as part of that effort. The government has also discussed expanding facilities for film production and related cultural activities.
Chakraborty has remained a prominent BJP figure in Bengal after a long career in cinema. His new role gives the veteran actor a formal position in the state’s cultural administration.
For Bengali cinema, the appointment brings one of its biggest film stars closer to the policy table—so the industry now has a rather famous face in the room when culture gets discussed.
