Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several INDIA bloc leaders were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday after opposition MPs attempted to reach Jantar Mantar for a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstration followed a day-long protest on Tuesday, when opposition leaders had sought a meeting with the Election Commission and demanded Kumar’s resignation. The INDIA bloc has raised allegations concerning voter-list revisions and has called for greater accountability from the poll body.

On Wednesday, buses carrying opposition MPs were stopped near Janpath and Ashoka Road before they could reach the designated protest site. Rahul Gandhi was detained, while Priyanka Gandhi and other women leaders staged a sit-in on the road before being removed by police.

Police cited restrictions on demonstrations and the need for prior permission. Opposition leaders, meanwhile, maintained that they were attempting to exercise their right to peaceful protest.

The episode marked another confrontation between the INDIA bloc and authorities over the Election Commission, with both sides maintaining sharply different positions on the handling of the protests and electoral-roll issues.
