The Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2026 is due to be announced in Oslo as the award marks 125 years since its inception.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner is set to be announced in Oslo on Friday, October 9, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee choosing from 287 nominees for one of the world’s most closely watched international honours.

The shortlist includes individuals and organisations working across humanitarian aid, conflict resolution and international justice. Names attracting attention among observers include emergency responders in Sudan, advocates for children in Ukraine, international courts and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. US President Donald Trump has also repeatedly expressed his desire to win the award.

The committee’s deliberations remain confidential. Nominations can be submitted by eligible officials, academics, former laureates and other authorised nominators.

Last year, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the Peace Prize for her efforts to promote democratic transition in Venezuela. She later gave her medal to Trump, but the Nobel Committee has clarified that the award itself cannot be transferred.

This year marks 125 years since the Nobel Peace Prize was first awarded in 1901. It has recognised 112 individuals and 28 organisations, with the International Committee of the Red Cross receiving the honour three times and the UN refugee agency winning twice. The prize has also been withheld on 19 occasions, mainly during periods of global conflict.

Other Nobel categories have already announced their 2026 winners, including medicine, physics, chemistry and literature. The economics prize announcement is scheduled for Monday.

The Peace Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately US$1.2 million. The announcement will draw attention to the people and institutions the committee believes have made significant contributions to peace amid continuing international tensions.
