Virat Kohli Smashes 139 as Shubman Gill Gives Him Freedom to Bat His Way
Virat Kohli's unbeaten 139 powered India to a comfortable win over West Indies, with captain Shubman Gill backing the veteran batter to play on his own terms.
Virat Kohli continued his remarkable ODI form as India defeated West Indies in the first match of the series. The veteran batter smashed an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls, helping India chase down 296 with plenty of overs to spare.
India captain Shubman Gill said the team trusts Kohli enough to allow him to decide how he wants to approach his innings. According to Gill, Kohli's record of repeatedly winning matches for India means the team can give him complete freedom when he is in the middle.
Kohli's latest century was his fourth in his last 11 ODI innings. He reached his hundred in aggressive fashion, finishing with 10 fours and nine sixes at a strike rate above 157.
The 37-year-old also shared a 151-run partnership with Gill, who scored 110 from 108 deliveries. While Gill provided the foundation, Kohli accelerated dramatically during the final stages to take the game away from West Indies.
Kohli said he has deliberately worked on adding another gear to his batting at this stage of his career. He also credited his physical fitness for helping him maintain a free mindset while playing aggressively.
The innings also produced several milestones. Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs and the fastest to the mark in terms of innings. He also reached 200 ODI sixes and moved past Tendulkar for the most ODI runs scored in India.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup still ahead, Gill is also looking beyond the top order. He said India would ideally like to have an eighth batting option capable of contributing 25 to 30 runs.
For now, Kohli's form gives India another major batting option as the team continues experimenting with its combination ahead of the World Cup.
