The World Health Organization has said Russia has reported no confirmed case of plague in Irkutsk oblast after a woman working at a laboratory studying the disease died of pneumonia.

WHO said it contacted Russian authorities following reports that the illness could have been linked to an accidental laboratory exposure. Russian health officials later attributed the woman’s illness to an acute respiratory viral infection. A second employee was also reported to have pneumonia of undetermined cause.

Authorities said preventive measures, including contact tracing, medical monitoring and laboratory testing, were carried out. Tests reportedly found no dangerous infectious pathogens among contacts, and monitoring has since concluded.

WHO assessed the risk as moderate-to-low for Irkutsk, low for Russia overall and very low for the wider WHO European region. The agency said plague naturally occurs among wild animals in the region, while pneumonic plague can spread through respiratory particles and become severe without timely treatment.

The incident has attracted international attention, with US officials urging Russia to share more information. Russian authorities have said the situation remains stable and under monitoring.

For now, the headline is less “plague outbreak” and more “health authorities checking every possible box”—which is exactly what you want when a dangerous disease enters the conversation.
