Ghana Moves to Join BRICS With India’s Support During Jaishankar Visit
Ghana’s Cabinet has approved a formal bid to join BRICS, with India backing Accra’s aspirations during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit.
Ghana has approved a decision to formally apply for BRICS membership, seeking to expand its economic and diplomatic partnerships while maintaining ties with existing international institutions. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the move during Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Accra.
Ablakwa said Ghana wants greater options for trade, investment, industrialisation and economic development. He stressed that joining BRICS would not mean abandoning traditional partners such as the IMF and World Bank, but would give the country additional avenues for cooperation.
India has backed Ghana’s aspirations. Jaishankar said New Delhi has been supportive of Ghana’s goals, while making clear that membership would require consideration by the wider BRICS grouping. So, Cabinet approval is a step towards membership—not a membership card just yet.
The announcement came alongside discussions on expanding India-Ghana cooperation in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, mining, defence, railways, agriculture and digital technology. The two countries also signed agreements covering agricultural research and training and science and technology.
Ghana’s move reflects its broader push to diversify international partnerships and strengthen engagement with the Global South, while India sees the relationship as part of its wider cooperation with African partners.
