A fresh controversy has reportedly emerged around the Pakistan cricket team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, after an unnamed squad member was fined following alleged misconduct with a female hotel staff member in Sri Lanka.
According to reports, the incident allegedly took place during the team’s stay in Kandy, shortly before Pakistan’s final Super Eight match against Sri Lanka.
Incident reportedly occurred at team hotel
As per a report by Telecom Asia Sport, the alleged incident occurred at the Golden Crown Hotel, where the Pakistan team was staying during the tournament.
Sources cited in the report claimed that a member of the Pakistan World Cup squad allegedly behaved inappropriately with a female housekeeping staff member.
The report stated that the staff member reportedly raised an alarm and called for help, after which other hotel staff intervened.
Team management informed
Following the incident, hotel authorities reportedly informed Pakistan team manager Naveed Cheema about the situation.
According to the report, hotel officials initially sought strict action against the player involved.
However, the issue was reportedly addressed internally after the team manager apologised to the hotel management on behalf of the player.
The cricketer was subsequently fined by the team management, according to the report.
Further action may be considered
The identity of the player has not been made public so far.
Reports indicate that the matter could be reviewed by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee after the team returns home.
Any additional action would depend on the outcome of that review.
Controversy after disappointing campaign
The controversy surfaced soon after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign ended without reaching the semifinals.
Although the team defeated Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super Eight match, they reportedly missed qualification for the knockout stage due to net run-rate calculations.
The latest incident has also revived discussions about previous controversies involving Pakistan touring squads, though those cases remain unrelated to the current report.
