The West Indies cricket team is currently facing travel delays in India after being eliminated from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as rising tensions in the Middle East have disrupted international flight routes.
Several airlines have reportedly restricted or rerouted flights through the Gulf region, leading to delays in the team’s return journey.
Airspace restrictions disrupt travel
According to Cricket West Indies (CWI), the travel complications are linked to security concerns caused by ongoing military developments in parts of the Middle East.
Airlines have adjusted their flight schedules and routes to avoid certain airspaces, which has affected multiple international flights, including those planned for the West Indies squad.
As a result, the players and support staff have remained in India for several days while waiting for updated travel arrangements.
Daren Sammy expresses concern
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy shared his frustration over the uncertainty in a series of social media posts.
In one post, he wrote that he simply wanted to return home. In another message posted later, he said the team had been waiting for several days without clear information about when they would be able to leave.
His comments reflected the anxiety within the squad as the delay continued.
Cricket West Indies working on travel plans
Cricket West Indies said the organisation is working with the International Cricket Council (ICC), airlines and relevant authorities to arrange a safe return for the team.
In its statement, the board said player and staff safety remains the top priority and that efforts are underway to secure the earliest possible travel options.
World Cup exit before travel delay
The team’s travel plans were originally scheduled after their elimination from the tournament.
West Indies were knocked out of the T20 World Cup following a defeat to India at Eden Gardens, where India successfully chased a target of 195 runs.
Indian batter Sanju Samson played a key role in the victory with an unbeaten 97 runs, helping India secure the win.
Uncertain timeline for departure
Officials have not yet confirmed when the West Indies squad will be able to leave India, as airlines continue to monitor the evolving security situation.
Authorities and cricket officials are expected to finalise updated travel arrangements once flight routes in the region become stable again.
