Indian batter Sanju Samson has set his sights on one more strong performance as India prepare to face New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final. The wicketkeeper-batter said another impactful innings would make the tournament even more special after his match-winning performance in the semi-final.
India secured their place in the final after a thrilling victory against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Samson’s Powerful Knock in Semi-Final
Samson played a crucial role in India’s win, scoring 89 runs from 42 balls. His innings included eight boundaries and seven sixes, helping India post a massive total of 253/7.
England responded strongly, with Jacob Bethell scoring an impressive 105 off 48 balls. However, England fell just short of the target as India sealed a seven-run victory, booking their spot in a second consecutive T20 World Cup final.
Personal Comeback for the Indian Batter
For Samson, the innings represented another important moment in what he described as a challenging but rewarding journey.
Earlier in the tournament, the Kerala cricketer had also scored an unbeaten 97 against West Indies in Kolkata, playing a key role in India’s progress in the knockout stages.
Speaking after the semi-final, Samson said the performance brought a sense of relief after years of effort.
He explained that he had spent a long time working on his game, focusing on training and improving mentally to perform better at the international level.
Learning From Difficult Phases
The 31-year-old admitted that he faced a difficult period earlier in his career, particularly during India’s home series against New Zealand.
According to Samson, that phase helped him realise the importance of returning to basics and staying patient in the shortest format of the game.
He also revealed that stepping away from social media helped him regain focus.
Samson said reducing distractions allowed him to concentrate more on preparation and performance.
India’s Aggressive Approach
Samson highlighted the aggressive strategy adopted by India’s top order in the tournament.
According to him, the powerplay overs often decide the direction of a T20 match. Batters aim to attack early once they settle at the crease, while others in the lineup continue the momentum if one player gets out.
This approach has helped India post strong totals throughout the tournament.
Final Against New Zealand
India will now face New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
With strong performances in recent matches, Samson hopes to continue his form and contribute once again for the team.
The batter said there is still “one more step” to complete, referring to the final match that will decide the tournament champion.
As India prepare for the title clash, Samson’s recent performances have placed him among the key players to watch in the highly anticipated final.
