G7 to Release 100 Million Barrels as Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs
G7 nations plan to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products, led by diesel, as record prices put pressure on consumers and governments.
The G7 has announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products over the coming weeks, with substantial diesel supplies expected to enter the market first. The move comes as diesel prices have reached record levels in the United States and Europe.
The release is expected to begin with a large volume of diesel within 20 days, followed by additional supplies over four months. France, which currently holds the G7 presidency, said the coordinated action aims to increase market liquidity and ease fuel prices.
US diesel prices reached a record $6.52 per gallon on September 22 and stood at $6.37 on Friday, according to AAA. Analysts said additional diesel supplies from Europe could reduce pressure on US exports and potentially lower prices.
The decision follows an earlier International Energy Agency agreement to release 426 million barrels of oil and petroleum products. Questions remain over whether the latest G7 release is additional to that commitment or part of the existing plan.
Energy experts have also warned that drawing down emergency stocks could leave countries with smaller reserves during future supply disruptions. Strategic reserves will eventually need to be replenished, potentially when prices are higher.
For now, the G7 is betting that more barrels on the market can cool prices. The bigger question is what happens when those emergency barrels are gone.
