A still from Vinod Kapri’s Pyre, which explores love, loneliness and ageing in a remote Uttarakhand village.
The trailer of Pyre, written and directed by Vinod Kapri, was unveiled on October 12. Set in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region, the film explores ageing, migration and companionship through the lives of an elderly couple in a village gradually losing its residents.

The story follows Padam Singh and Tulsi, affectionately known as Aama-Bubu. They share a quiet life shaped by everyday chores, familiar disagreements and the bond they have built over decades.

Their son, Hariya, has been away for 28 years. His prolonged absence highlights the emotional impact of migration on families left behind in remote mountain communities.

The trailer blends moments of humour with reflections on loneliness, declining health and the uncertainties of old age. The Himalayan landscape provides the backdrop for a story centred on love and the resilience of companionship.

About Pyre and its cast

The film features Padam Singh Kapri, 80, a retired Army serviceman, and Heera Devi, 70. Both are Uttarakhand residents who had never appeared before a camera before the project.

Pyre has travelled to international film festivals and received 18 awards, including 15 Best Film honours. The film has also earned recognition for its direction, music, cinematography and sound.

The makers have planned special screenings in Berinag, Bageshwar and Srinagar Garhwal from October 14 to 17 through the Picture Time mobile theatre initiative.

Produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri, Pyre will release in Hindi and Malayalam on October 30.
