Taylor Swift’s Patient Zero Goes Gothic With Dakota Johnson, Colin Farrell
Taylor Swift’s self-directed Patient Zero video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell in a gothic ghost story that has sparked strong reactions from fans.
Taylor Swift has taken a darker cinematic turn with her new music video Patient Zero, which premiered during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. Starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, the self-directed video transforms a complicated love triangle into a gothic ghost story.
Johnson plays a woman trapped in a troubled marriage with Farrell’s character, while Swift appears as his former partner. The video blends gothic horror, psychological thriller and true-crime elements, creating an eerie atmosphere around a mysterious house.
Swift directed the project with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, whose work includes The Revenant, Birdman and Gravity. Swift later described collaborating with Lubezki as a dream-like experience and thanked Johnson and Farrell for joining the project. She also credited Cara Delevingne for appearing as the other woman.
The singer said the house represents the emotional coldness of a relationship that has gradually faded. The visual has since drawn strong reactions online, with fans describing it as chilling, beautiful, creative and more like a short film than a conventional music video.
The Patient Zero release came during a major week for Swift. She also received the first Artist Director Honors at the VMAs and collected her 31st VMA, while her expanded album The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore continued to dominate attention.
The gothic visual has added another cinematic chapter to Swift’s growing body of self-directed music videos.
